Enigmatica
Moonlight leaks through the rafters of a temple where young disciples of the Way spend their mornings in quiet discipline and their afternoons ignoring the strange glimmers at the edges of the forest. The valley below the shrine has begun to stir with something that does not fit any scripture. Animals with human affect. A centipede that debates the ethics of reincarnation. A monkey that brews tea and holds grudges. A caterpillar that asks unsettling questions about the nature of death. The monks name them "Enigmatics" — creatures who do not belong to the known order of beasts, gods, or men. Most people cannot see them at all.
Chen Xian can. She is the weakest disciple in her temple, unable to summon lightning or split stone, but the Enigmatics speak to her without fear, and that fragile, unprecedented bond makes her the axis of a crisis the heavens want erased. Celestial hunters descend from the firmament with one directive: prune the anomaly before it contaminates the cosmic balance. What they do not understand is that Chen Xian has spent her whole life being told she does not belong either. She is not protecting curiosities. She is protecting a family the fate of the world refuses to tolerate, and the question pressing against the temple roof is how far a forgotten disciple is willing to go to guard the unknowable.
